Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix was a German painter, printmaker, and water-colorist. Noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of Weimar society and of the brutality of war, he, along with George Grosz, is widely considered one of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit (“New Objectivity,” an anti-expressionist German art movement of the 1920s).Dix was deeply affected by his time in WWI, where during the trench warfare he would draw in the midst of the waiting. He embraced every aspect of reality including its negative side. He was a critical and curious investigator. He was later proclaimed a degenerate artist by Hitler’s regime during WWII. When he refused to leave Germany he was fired from his post as an art teacher at the Dresden Academy and briefly imprisoned.
